Der Newweling ist eine traditionelle Mainzer Kerze, die zum Totengedenken an Allerheiligen auf dem Friedhof und Markt erworben werden konnte. Die Kerze wurde erstmals in einer Urkunde im 14. Jahrhundert erwähnt, doch die Tradition ist mit dem Ende der Produktion der letzten Kerzenfabrik 2021 ins Schwanken geraten. In meiner Masterthesis habe ich mich mit der Vergangenheit des Newweling auseinandergesetzt, den jetzigen Zustand dokumentiert und bin zu möglichen Zukunftsaussichten für dieses hyperlokale Objekt in den Austausch gegangen. Durch Interviews, Workshops, Druckarbeiten und Collagen habe ich ein utopisches Zukunftsszenario entwickelt, in dem der Newweling ein Commons ist. Als kulturelles Objekt findet die Kerze in dem Konzept der erweiterten Bibliothek einen Platz. Durch acht Collagen habe ich diese Idee visualisiert.

The Newweling is a traditional candle from Mainz that could be purchased at the cemetery and market on All Saints Day to commemorate the dead. The candle was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century, but the tradition has faltered with the end of production at the last candle factory in 2021. In my master's thesis I dealt with the past of the Newweling, documented the current condition of the tradition and am moving on to possible Future prospects for this hyperlocal object. By doing interviews, workshops, prints and collages I was able to develop an utopian scenario in which the Newweling is a commons. As a cultural object, the candle finds a place in the concept of the expanded library. I visualized this idea through eight collages.
