Das Erröten hat keinen singulären Auslöser und ist aus physiologischer Sicht ein Vorgang des vegetativen Nervensystems. Da kein anderes Tier errötet, nannte Darwin es „die menschlichste aller Regungen“. Es passiert unwillkürlich, ist nicht willentlich steuerbar und kann als somatische Sprache gesehen werden; als eine Art physiologische Antwort auf einen geistigen Zustand oder ein Gefühl. Im Moment des Errötens ist das Erleben ein Innen und Außen zugleich – der Welt zugehörig, da von außen sichtbar, sowie entrückt, da von innen spürbar.

Blushing does not have a single trigger and, from a physiological point of view, is a process of the autonomic nervous system. Because no other animal blushes, Darwin called it “the most human of all emotions.” It happens involuntarily, cannot be controlled voluntarily and can be seen as somatic language; as a kind of physiological response to a mental state or feeling. In the moment of blushing, the experience is both inside and outside at the same time - belonging to the world, as visible from the outside, and removed, as noticeable from within.
